The MotoGP season returned from its summer break earlier this month with the British GP at Silverstone, where Ducati Lenovo’s Francesco Bagnaia produced a storming ride to claim his fourth race win of 2022.
Yet Monster Energy Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo, who could only come home in eighth place, remains well in charge of the Riders’ Championship battle – The Frenchman holds a 22-point lead over Aprilia Racing’s Aleix Espargaro in second spot, with third-placed Bagnaia a further 27 points back.
Quartararo served a long-lap penalty at Silverstone but believes he could have done better than a P8 finish: “despite the long lap I think I could have stayed in the front because my problem wasn’t the distance. In the end we lost 1.5 seconds it wasn’t bad.
The reigning MotoGP World Champion added, “If it was just a bike at the front and we lost 1.5 seconds it would be fine but behind some riders the rear tyre warmed up a lot and we don’t understand why… I mean, we know, because with the temperature increase the tyre loses performance and with the hard tyre it would have been better but it’s always easy to talk after the race. With the front tyre everything is okay.
Quartararo continued, “What did I see on the other bikes (Ducati, Suzuki, Aprilia and KTM)? Top speed, acceleration, rear-wheel grip… a lot of things we don’t have but I need not say too much about it. The main thing is to stay focused and not look at the negative points we have because we can’t improve them this year.”
Espargaro, meanwhile, suffered a fractured heel at the British GP weekend and will hope that a week of rest and recovery enables him to race at the Austrian GP. His Aprilia teammate, Maverick Vinales, is hoping to build on an impressive P2 finish at Silverstone.
“I believed a lot in this project. I believe a lot and I believe a lot in myself,” said the Spaniard. “So, I always thought it was a matter of time, a matter of working. We know we have the potential to be in the front fighting in the races, as we’ve shown in the previous events.
“And our focus is in ourselves. Still I’m not at the maximum with the bike, with the tracks, so I just keep riding, keep believing and try to be focused on the correct things.”
