The previous round in Germany saw Monster Energy Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo claim a second successive race win – and his third of the season – to continue his strong defence of the Riders’ Championship title.
The Frenchman put in a brilliant showing at the Sachsenring to lead almost from start to finish – and fully capitalise on another crash from title rival Francesco Bagnaia of Lenovo Ducati – as he extended his lead at the top of the standings to 34 points.
Quartararo’s nearest chaser is Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro (who has finished in the top five in all but two races this season), while Pramac Ducati’s Johann Zarco is third, a further 27 points back. Gresini Ducati’s Enea Bastianini has slipped to fourth after his recent troubles, while KTM’s Brad Binder is up to fifth – displacing Bagnaia.
Quartararo will look forward to going back to the TT Circuit in Assen, having claimed victory in the Netherlands last year.
“I’m tired, I was sick most of the weekend and was coughing during the race, but I am super happy,” said Quartararo after his triumph in Germany. He continues to brush aside questions in regards to another title triumph: “I am not thinking of the Championship,” he insisted.
“I am here to win as many races as possible, maybe by the time it comes to Japan and Thailand [in September and October], I will think about the title itself. We are going to a track I love at Assen next week.”
While Bagnaia has had his issues in recent times – retiring from three of the last four races – his teammate Jack Miller showed strong form in the previous round to come home in third place, despite having to undergo a ‘long lap’ penalty for a yellow flag infringement.
“I had an eventful race and nearly crashed,” said the Australian. “I was happy with the job I did, I put everything out there.”
Zarco, meanwhile, is another form rider to watch, whose attacking style will suit the Assen track. The French maverick suffered through the intense heat of Germany and is hopeful the Netherlands will be more temperate.
“It was a nightmare,” said second-placed Zarco of the conditions, “but I ensured my runners-up spot when I decided to chase down Fabio after Bagnaia crashed. I battled hard for it, and was exhausted at the end, but it is never easy for me and I just have to tough these races out.”
